Anthropic's IPO Masks an $800bn Compute Bill Coming Due
Anthropic has filed to go public, posting $16.3bn in revenue over the first half of 2025, up from $1.2bn a year earlier, and narrowing its operating loss to around $700m from $2.1bn. Buried deeper in the S-1 are non-cancellable compute agreements worth more than $800bn, including $161bn with Broadcom and $115bn with Google, none of which hit the income statement yet. The filing also flags a pivot from leasing compute off rivals to building its own data centres, a shift that will swing the business from capex-light to capex-heavy just as it hits public markets. Customer concentration remains opaque, with the largest buyer at roughly 11-12% and the rest masked.
Treasuries Rip as AI Jitters Crack the Tech Rally
The 10-year Treasury yield fell below 5% for the first time in a month, including a 19 basis point single-day move, as the Nasdaq 100 dropped nearly 3% on Thursday in its worst session since June. Corporate bond spreads widened to their broadest since May as investors reassessed how big tech will fund the AI buildout. Industrials tied to data-centre construction and interest-sensitive sectors have been drifting lower since May, leaving the rally resting on a shrinking group of mega-cap names.
Neocloud Shakeout Looms as Debt Markets Slam Shut
Debt financing has largely dried up for companies without revenue streams independent of AI data centres, setting up a wave of distress across more than 200 so-called neocloud operators. Smaller GPU-cloud players face consolidation or collapse, while the hyperscalers' cash machines and Nvidia-led semiconductor complex would absorb very different shocks if the buildout deflates. CoreWeave is among the names most exposed.
Brazil Markets Crater After Lula Re-election
Brazil's Ibovespa plunged as much as 17% and the real posted its sharpest drop in over two decades after incumbent President Lula won re-election. The sell-off reflects investor anxiety over fiscal continuity under another Lula term.
